In general terms, what does your job entail?
I am responsible for the training needs of all Meteor employees, to ensure they are receiving the training required in order to successfully follow their career paths.
Describe the main events in a typical day
Developing and delivering training courses, arranging external training courses, managing an online training system, carrying out training needs analysis and managing the company training budget.
Do you feel that you are using your talents in your job?
Yes.
After leaving school what were the major milestones in your career development?
I attended a prep. Art School for approximately six months after my Leaving Cert. In 1996, at 18, I got a job in America Online (AOL) as a Customer Service Rep. After 6 months, I was promoted to UK Customer Service Trainer. I completed an IITD Certificate in Training course. I then moved up within AOL to be UK Sales Trainer, and finally UK Technical Trainer. While in AOL, I trained a FÁS back-to-work scheme on basic computer skills, including ECDL, as part of an AOL/FÁS link up.
I left AOL in 2000 after my ex-manager moved to Meteor, and asked if I would join Meteor to set-up the training department. I joined Meteor as Customer Care Trainer in June 2000. I completed an IMI Management Certificate course and was promoted to be Senior Training specialist, where I am now. I have recently completed a Graduate Diploma Course in Training and Development with the ICM.
In 2002, I set up my own company, Visionary Print & Design. It is a graphic design company I run part time, as well as working full time for Meteor.
What do you like about your work?
My work is very satisfying, I love to see a training class completed with 12 people leaving with new skills.
Is there any aspect of your work that you not like?
There can be some repetition.
Do you have any specific advice for someone wanting to enter IT?
