In general terms, what does your job entail?
Troubleshooting PC-related difficulties for end users. Maintenance of servers. Ability to balance multiple tasks at one time and keep on top of open issues. Overseeing all aspects of IT within the organisation, from hardware to software.
Describe the main events in a typical day
Day-to-day dealing of strategic operations of the department such as telephone and on site support for PCs and laptops. Operating systems such as Windows 98, Win2k, XP. Support for servers (MsWin2K, Novell Netware, etc.) Back office applications (SQL Databases, Ms Exchange, etc.) Providing support for remote systems and remote access applications. Network support and physical layout of devices (switches, hub, routers). Monitoring security intrusions and preventions.
Do you feel that you are using your talents in your job?
Education and experience played a significant role in my job, and I always practise them to best of my ability.
After leaving school what were the major milestones in your career development?
Financial pressures prevented my studying at third-level fulltime. I joined the professional field with little or no experience still focusing on education. I completed a degree course as a part-time student. During this period I also acquired many certificates in IT sector: a Degree in Business Information Management, MCSE (Microsoft Certified Engineer), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associates), and many other computer and business diplomas. Job experience includes almost 5 years in the IT Sector from Customer Support role to Network Administrator.
What do you like about your work?
Creativity, complexity, new ideas and scenarios learning and improving myself in what I do best.
Is there any aspect of your work that you not like?
The essence of time in keeping up the fast pace in ever changing technology.
Do you have any specific advice for someone wanting to enter IT?
Education is the most important aspect and the key to any field. Certification in IT courses also hold their value. An individual should have an appetite for knowledge and information so as to learn and experience new things.
